Florence Nightingale Summary

Florence Nightgale was born the 12 May in 1820. She was born in Florence and thats how she got her name. At that time high-class women did not usually go to school. But Florence's father educated her at home.

When Florence grew up she liked visiting sick people and wanted to become a nurse. Her parents did not want her to be a nurse though. Because to work as nurse was not a job suited for high-class women. Actually they didn't want her to work at all. But they couldn't stop Florence. She moved to Germany to learn about nursing. There she looked after sick people and helped during operations.

When Britain entered the Crimean War a group of 39 nurses, including Florence, went to Crimea to help the wounded soldiers at the military hospitals. The military hospitals were really dirty and badly organised so Florence cleaned them up and made them safe. Because of that the deathrate decreased heavily.

After the war she wrote a book about how to make hospitals better. A lot of people asked her for advice about designing hospitals.
In 1860 she even opened a school.

She died at the age of 90 in England.
